A queen mattress doesn’t fit in a car, doesn’t compress, doesn’t bend around a stairwell landing, and takes up a huge amount of space wherever it ends up. The City of Toronto will collect mattresses curbside, but they generally need to be bagged or wrapped, they take up most of your collection allowance, and the item still has to get from your bedroom to the curb — which, in a walk-up or a condo, is the entire difficulty.
A mattress is also highly recyclable. The steel springs, foam, fibre and wood frame can all be separated and recovered, which is why they shouldn’t just be thrown into general waste if there’s a recycling option available.
Tell us honestly when you book. A mattress being removed because of bed bugs needs to be sealed before it leaves the room so the problem doesn’t travel through the rest of the building — particularly in an apartment or condo. We’d far rather know in advance and handle it properly than find out at the door.
